History:
In 1994, the School of Nursing established the first Duquesne University Nurse-Managed Wellness Center at two high-rise apartment buildings for low-income older adults. These settings house vulnerable older adults who are aging in place, becoming frail, and experiencing chronic health problems. Since that time additional sites have been opened at other senior housing complexes and at CitiParks Senior Centers throughout the Pittsburgh area. The interdisciplinary nursing centers work to prevent unnecessary hospitalizations and premature institutionalization through health promotion, monitoring chronic conditions and facilitating access to existing community services. These academic nursing centers and the community work together to create and implement health and wellness programs to meet the needs of individuals served by the centers.
