Southwinds, Inc.
Southwinds' mission is to provide residences in the community for developmentally challenged individuals where their quality of life is enhanced by specialized services, social involvement, and independent living.
Description:
Fifty-two individuals call Southwinds home. They live in 14 residences in the South Hills communities of Baldwin, Bethel Park, Carnegie, Castle Shannon, Dormont, Mt.Lebanon, South Park, and Upper St. Clair. We provide 24-hour staff supervision at every home. Direct care staff helps individuals set and pursue goals for personal growth and supervise training in daily-living skills to develop their abilities. Transportation is provided to employment, workshops, therapeutic activity centers, medical care, therapies, personal appointments, and recreation.
History:
Southwinds had its beginnings with Parent to Parent, South Hills, a support group for parents of mentally retarded persons. In 1983, they broadened the scope of their activities. An effort was made to acquaint professionals and legislators with the great need for expansion of community services, especially for the teenage and over 21 segment of the mentally retarded population in the South Hills. They studied the problem in depth, and that same year, they met with the Association of Retarded Citizens and Allegheny County to present their findings. A proposal was prepared and submitted to the County's Mental Health/Mental Retardation Program in November. It was approved and Southwinds became a service provider. These parents became the founders of Southwinds. In January 1984 an executive director was selected, and three houses were leased to serve nine adults.
Southwinds is funded by the Allegheny County Department of Human Services, and licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare.
