HEARTH
HEARTH's vision is that every family and individual should be able to live in safe, affordable housing. Our mission is to provide a progression of supportive services and housing that empowers families to become independent, self-sufficient, and adequately housed.
Description:
HEARTH, which stands for Homelessness Ends with Advocacy, Resources, Training, and Housing, offers the following 2 programs:
- Benedictine Place- A transitional housing program for homeless women with children designed to support them while they work to become economically self-sufficient.
- HEARTH at Benet Woods- A permanent, affordable housing rental community consisting of a set of duplexes for working families who meet income guidelines.
History:
In 1989, as Director of the North Hills YWCA, Jean Stultz recognized the tremendous need of displaced and homeless women to find affordable transitional housing and convened a group of service providers to address the issue. From this group, a Board of Directors was formed who worked diligently to transform the classrooms of St. Benedict's Academy, located in Ross Township, into self-contained apartments. HEARTH opened its doors in 1995 with a transitional housing program called Benedictine Place. HEARTH at Benet Woods is a new program still in the construction phase. It is scheduled to open in the summer of 2009.
