The Salvation Army-New Kensington Corps Ark of Learning Tutor/Mentor Program provides a safe place for community children that is conducive to studying and learning and promotes academic success. Children in grades K-9 are matched with screened and trained volunteers who serve as tutors/mentors. Volunteers assist children in completion of homework, enhance academic skills, instill good study habits, emphasize positive moral values and ethics.

Description:
The Ark of Learning Tutor/Mentor Program provides academic support services by matching screened and trained volunteers for an hour of one-on-one tutoring. That hour is spent enhancing basic skills, completing homework assignments, instilling good study habits, setting goals. Input from parents and teachers on how to best utilize the tutoring hour is requested and encouraged. The neighboring school districts have approved the Ark of Learning Tutor/Mentor Program and supports the program in their schools. Student registration forms are distributed through the schools. This tutor/mentor service is offered at no cost to the families. Group mentoring activities are also offered monthly. These are group events scheduled to offer social, recreational, and culture opportunities to the students and tutors registered with the program. Parenting sessions are offered to support the parental role as primary educator of their children and to provide an open forum of parenting strategies and advice. Training and ongoing support services are provided for tutors/mentors. Tutors and students meet weekly for 1-hour sessions at program sites.
