Allegheny Intermediate Unit Adult English As A Second Language Program

The Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU3) is an educational service agency supporting schools, families, and communities. We model and promote effective research-based practices in teaching and learning. Through partnerships and collaborative leadership, we provide instruction and services that meet the needs of our diverse community of learners.

History:
For over 30 years, the English as a Second Language Program for Adults (ESL) has been serving refugees, immigrants and others who come to Pittsburgh needing help to learn the English language. Our FREE program teaches basic oral communication skills--listening, speaking, reading and writing to nearly 1,000 adults per year. In addition, we help learners with the basic life, social, and survival skills that are necessary for success in families, at work, and in the community. We provide these FREE classes in the morning, afternoon and evening.

The Adult ESL program also works closely with area businesses to support their foreign-born employees who need additional assistance with English language skills. Please contact us if you have employees who would benefit from on-site ESL in the workplace.
