Southwinds’ board needs:
- A member with a medical background—preferably a doctor or nurse.
- A member with geriatric background—nursing home administrator, geriatric specialist, etc.
- A member with real estate or home construction background—preferably someone knowledgeable about accessibility issues.
- A member with expertise in fundraising and development.
- A member with expertise in human resources and/or labor law.
- Members who have a relative (son/daughter, sibling, niece/nephew, cousin, etc) with an intellectual or developmental disability who have a personal (in addition to professional) interest in assuring that the quality of services that are available for people with developmental disabilities remains high.
Board members are expected to attend board meetings six times per year (generally every other month) in the evening (this may be important for them to know if they have issues with driving at night). Board members are also expected to participate on at least one board committee six times per year (generally every other month), meeting times vary by committee (some in mornings, some in afternoons, some in evenings). Board members are able to select which committee they want to be on based on their interest or expertise. Anyone who is interested and would like to observe a meeting before making a commitment to join is welcome to do so. Once a commitment is made, we provide an orientation for new board members with takes about 6 hours and is scheduled at the convenience of the new board member.
