A Mother's Voice Volunteer

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on October 6, 2009

Our main volunteer opportunity is our Mother's Voice Program. Our program strives to maintain the bonds between a mother and her child(ren) during a period of the mother's incarceration. The mothers record themselves reading a book and we mail the CDs, along with a copy of the book, so that children are able to listen to their mother's voice and read along. Our volunteers assist the mothers by helping with the equipment, assisting the mothers with lower literacy levels and bringing the tapes from the jail so that they may be mailed. The minimum requirement is one visit a month. Most volunteers stay in the jail for 1-2hours during a visit.

Volunteers must be able to receive Act 33/34 clearances and travel to volunteer in the Allegheny County Jail.

This opportunity is sponsored by: Lydia's Place, Inc.
