APPRISE Medicare Counseling Recommended agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on September 22, 2009

APPRISE is the state health insurance counseling program for Allegheny County, and is operated by Family Services of Western PA through a contract with the county's Area Agency on Aging. APPRISE seeks volunteers to become trained Medicare counselors, able to navigate the extensive array of options and information, including Part D prescription drug plans, and help clients to choose the health plan that’s right for them. Volunteer counselors also answer questions about coverage, beneficiary rights, confusing bills, and extra help available to pay for insurance and medical costs. We also need volunteers to serve as receptionists on Mondays, answering phones for the statewide APPRISE hotline. APPRISE will coordinate training for volunteers to provide them with the information and resources required to become a volunteer counselor.

Volunteers must have excellent phone skills and patience. Prior knowledge of Medicare is a plus, but is not required. Training is provided.
