Interfaith Volunteer Caregiver's (IVC) Safety for Seniors program seeks volunteers to conduct home safety checks for elderly residents. Volunteers will participate in a brief but thorough training session, then go out in pairs to help residents inspect their homes room-by-room to identify and mitigate fire and fall hazards. During the home visit, volunteers will distribute a kit of free safety supplies, help install items such as smoke alarms, and recommend ways to create a safer living environment. Each safety check takes about one hour. A volunteer team typically will conduct two checks in a row after receiving an hour of training, so the total time commitment for the project - including travel time - is about 4 hours. Repeat volunteers are welcome. Additional project dates can be set up for groups wishing to volunteer together, perhaps focusing on a neighborhood of special interest to them.
Training will be provided at the outset of the project. Each pair of volunteers needs access to a vehicle. With advance notice about volunteers with limited transportation, IVC can try to arrange carpools. Volunteers are encouraged to bring along a drill (preferably a cordless one) if they have one, to aid in installing smoke alarms. Parents and guardians with teenagers are welcome to volunteer together!
