Apartment Transition Teams Recommended agencies

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on January 6, 2009

Women often come to Benedictine Place with mixed emotions. They are glad to have found safe, affordable housing for their children but are still nervous about making the transition into our program. Coming to us after experiencing a housing crisis, they tend to have low self-esteem and little hope that their situation can improve.

Apartment Transition Teams (ATT) directly impact these new program participants by making an apartment a home for a family. Teams, usually consisting of 2 persons, stock the apartment with necessary items, add decor, make welcome baskets for moms, and sit stuffed animals on the beds of the children. They also do some light cleaning and complete an inventory of the apartment.

Teams are called as needed when a program participant moves out and can perform this job in the evening if necessary.

Major responsibilities of ATT volunteers include the following:

  1. Complete exit inspection for outgoing program participant by doing an inventory of the contents of the apartment.
  2. Complete a new inventory of the apartment for the incoming program participant after restocking any missing or damaged items.
  3. Perform necessary cleaning tasks including (but not limited to): Removing broken and worn-out items and expired or open food containers; Washing dishes, linens, and towels; Removing all garbage; Wiping surfaces; Vacuuming
  4. Make the apartment a "home" by: Making the beds; Stocking kitchen cabinets with 2 or 3 bags of food; Stocking household items such as sandwich bags and paper towels; Appropriately arranging the furniture in and adding decor to the apartment; Preparing a "welcome basket"
  5. Maintain confidentiality of the residents of Benedictine Place.
  6. Anyone interested in this opportunity will be asked to attend an orientation that will serve as an introduction to the agency as well as to this specific job. They will also participate in a brief interview with the Client Resource Coordinator.

    Qualifications include the following:

    1. Good housekeeping and organizational skills.
    2. Dependable, reliable, and responsible.

Time commitment varies by apartment, but generally, we estimate five to eight total hours per apartment. Volunteers are contacted when an apartment becomes empty and scheduled only if available within the next few days, as transitions must be done quickly. Teams generally transition 2 or 3 apartments per year.
