According to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the number one killer of women. Nearly 500,000 women die of heart disease each year. That is more than the total of the next seven causes of death, including cancer. The good news is women have the opportunity to take charge of their heart health and protect themselves. Exercise, proper nutrition, stress reduction, controlling blood pressure, weight loss, and smoking cessation are all factors that help women maintain healthy hearts. And an important thing all women should do on a regular basis is get a heart health screening. Working Hearts, a coalition dedicated to women's heart health, education and research, is making it easy for Pittsburgh women to do just that. On Friday, February 20th, 2004, Woman's Heart Day in Pittsburgh: A Celebration of Heart Health will be held at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. This celebration will offer FREE heart health screenings, including screenings of cholesterol levels, blood pressure and body mass index, as well as access to health professionals who can help women understand their results. Women will also be able to get fitness tips, take home giveaways, register for free and exciting prizes, and visit dozens of helpful exhibits.
