Description:
Our programs and services:
• educate, support and empower people with
disabilities, parents, family members
to get needed services.
• help professionals better understand and
respond to the needs of people with disabilities.
• work with people with disabilities,
families, community organizations, local
officials and school districts to improve services.

We provide:
• Information and Assistance:
• Educational Advocacy: help parents understand IEP's and improve services
• Advocacy and Support to individuals with disabilities and family members

History:
History

1954: The Arc of Racine County, Inc. becomes incorporated as the Association for Retarded Children.
The purpose of the organization as stated in the original incorporation papers was to “promote the general welfare” of people with disabilities and to “foster the development of integrated programs”. The organization joins with the state and national organization.

1960: President Kennedy assigns the first President's Commission on Disabilities. Hundreds of people attended "Kennedy Dinners" in Racine. They shared stories and worked for change.

1970's Arc advocates work to get laws passed. In 1975, the federal law is passed to provide a free appropriate public education for students with disabilities.
1980's: Office moves to United Way building at 818 Sixth St.
1993 Name change: to simply The Arc (small r and c) but our mission remains the same. The letters ARC are no longer an acronym.

2003: Office moves to 1220 Mound Avenue.
