Description:
The Senior Companion Program connects older adults with volunteers who visit regularly to listen, share experiences, reminisce and relieve loneliness and boredom. The program helps to foster relationships between older adults and local services, faith communities, spiritual care, family and friends. Volunteers serve as advocates for those visited and stay attentive to their needs.
History:
The Senior Companion Program was founded in 1978 by the Racine Dominican Sisters The sisters hoped this program would alleviate the loneliness witnessed among older adults. Today Sisters and lay people are volunteer visitors.
