Family Literacy Of Racine
Family Literacy of Racine's long term goal is to break the cycle of inter-generational poverty. Mission Statement: "To provide [low income/low literacy] families with the literacy and life skills needed for success in today's world."
Description:
Family Literacy of Racine is a social service/education organization providing integrated, comprehensive programming for family literacy: 1) adult education; 2) early childhood education--birth to 6; 3) school- age after school program; 4) parent education; home visitation. Adult Education takes two forms: English as a 2nd Language instruction and GED preparation. Five children's classes range from an infant/toddler room to a "middle school classroom" of 4th - 8th graders. "Family/community learning" connects families to numerous social services/education organizations in Racine. Home visitation provides support, goal setting, and child development assessments (done collaboratively with parents in-home). Occasional "family time" also provides the opportunity for families AND staff to learn and have fun together.
History:
Family Literacy of Racine began in 1996 as a Federally funded collaboration between Gateway Technical College and Racine Unified School District. The program was called Racine Even Start, and for the first 8 years provided services at Janes School and Gateway Technical College. In 2004, the name was changed to Racine Family Literacy, reflecting the program's independent status. The same year FLR moved to Emmaus Lutheran Church. Family Literacy of Racine's major supporters are the Dominican Mission Fund, United Way, and original partners RUSD and Gateway.
