NAMI Erie-Ottawa
Our mission is to offer education, support, and advocacy for those consumers and their families affected by mental illness.
Description:
We are an affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). NAMI is a nonprofit, grassroots, self-help organization for people with mental illness, their families, and community members who care. NAMI, with 210,000 members nationwide, is dedicated to the eradication of mental illnesses and to improving the quality of life for all whose lives are affected by diseases such as ADHD, schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders. We provide local support and educational classes that provide you with a means of sharing and connection to others with similar experiences. While we learn more about the illness, we also learn from each other. Principles of Support: -We will see the individual first, not the illness.
- We recognize mental illnesses are brain disorders.
- We aim for better coping skills.
- We will find strength in sharing experiences.
- We reject stigma in ourselves and others.
- We won't judge anyone's pain as less than our own.
- We forgive ourselves and reject guilt.
- We embrace humor as healthy.
- We accept a better future in a realistic way.
- We will never give up hope.
