Wood County Corps-an AmeriCorps program
Wood County Corps strengthens our communities by promoting volunteerism and providing service to residents and communities through focused programs, outreach, and personal development in citizenship.
Description:
Often referred to as the domestic Peace Corps, AmeriCorps is a network of national service programs that engage more than 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet critical needs in education, public safety, health, and the environment. AmeriCorps members serve through more than 2,100 nonprofit public agencies, and faith-based organizations. They tutor and mentor youth, build affordable housing, teach computer skills, clean parks and streams, run after-school programs, and help communities respond to disasters. Created in 1993, AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service, which also oversees Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together these programs engage more than 2 million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. Wood County Corps (WCC) is a program of United Way of Greater Toledo which coordinates AmeriCorps members for a variety of organizations dedicated to serving the needs of our communities. All WCC activities are aimed at "getting things done" wherever we serve.
History:
Wood County Corps has been an AmeriCorps program since 2004. Bowling Green State University had been the fiscal agent from a planning grant year ‘04-‘05 through the second operational year. United Way of Greater Toledo has become the program applicant/ fiscal agent assuming responsibility for the operation of WCC with the start of the ‘07-‘08 program years. UWGT was a key partner in the consortium that created the WCC program. The local UWGT Wood County Director has been a member of the Advisory Board and a key consultant for the program since its inception. UWGT is committed to programs that give help and mobilize resources. With the focus of the WCC program to address the UWGT Community Impact Plan there will be a direct correlation between the work of corps members and major initiatives in the county. A "Community Voices" survey conducted in 2005 by UWGT also supports the 4 major areas of deliverables for the WCC program--UWGT is confident that AmeriCorps members can serve to enhance the community needs in Wood County, civically engage college students in service and set a standard to work with baby-boomers, college professors and the community at-large.
