The Mission of The Ability Center is: To assist people with disabilities to live, work and socialize within a fully accessible community.
Description:
The Ability Center is a Center for Independent Living which actively supports people with disabilities and their families in Northwest Ohio. We do this through a wide variety of direct services and by working in partnership with community organizations. The Center's programs include: Information and Referral, Advocacy, Peer Support, Independent Living Skills Training, Speakers Bureau, Youth Services, Recreation Inclusion, Housing Resource Center, Volunteering, Equipment Loan, Wheelchair Ramp Building, and more.
History:
The Center was established in 1920 as a hospital for children with Polio and other disabilities. In the early 1960's we transitioned into Opportunity Kindergarten for children with any disability. In the 1980's we made our final transition, becoming a Center for Independent Living for men, women and children with any disability in Ottawa, Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Henry, Defiance and Williams Counties.

The Center is located on Monroe Street, in Sylvania, Ohio, between Whiteford and Corey Roads, west of the Westfield Franklin Park Mall, across the street from Claudia's Natural Foods.
