Bowling Green Christian Food Pantry
The mission of the Bowling Green Christian Food Pantry is to provide food for people in Wood County who have short-term emergency food needs. We strive to serve those in need in a loving, non-judgmental, and compassionate manner.
Description:
We depend on donations for operating expenses as well as a good portion of food we hand out, and all donated funds are used wisely. We also depend heavily on volunteers, since the pantry director is our only paid employee. Volunteers do the rest. We accept donated food (including day-old and unsold food from local businesses), but money is more helpful. Our director can get food for less than the average shopper - sometimes even free! - from the Northwest Ohio Food Bank. However, all help is welcome!
History:
The first BG food pantry, known simply as "The Hunger Pantry," started in 1983 in the basement of the Link, run by Link voluneteer. Eventually, its operation outgrew the Link's resources, and their director asked the BG Ministral Association for help. The newly managed pantry opened on January 4, 1984, and has been going strong ever since, despite several moves. Currently, it is in the basement of the brick building on the corner of West Wooster and Gorrell, with an auxillery pantry at St. John's Episcopal Church. When the pantry started many churches were involved. Special collections were taken up on the first Sunday of every month, with non-perishable food gathered during the rest of the month. Some churches even sent monthly checks, in addition to their collections. Fewer churches are involved now, but a core of dedicated volunteers, supporters, and board members keeps the work going. In addition, the pantry receives donations and assistance from a number of local organizations, clubs and businesses.
