The MLK Kitchen for the Poor is committed to helping feed homeless and low income individuals, and to provide clothing, counseling, and support to those in need in our immediate community.

Description:
The MLK Kitchen for the Poor was established in 1969 by the late Rev. Harvey Savage, Sr., in response to the tremendous need he saw in his community. Located in Toledo’s central city, the Kitchen feeds more than 200 people each day, from school children to the elderly. Some clients live in nearby housing projects or single-family homes; others are homeless. According to the U.S. Census (2000), the median income in the neighborhoods served by the Kitchen is just $5,502.

History:
The Rev. Harvey Savage opened the doors fo MLK Kitchen for the Poor over 40 years ago after witnessing, first hand, the problem of hunger in his own neighborhood. The idea for the MLK Kitchen for the Poor began one evening when Rev. Savage heard a noise coming from behind his house. Expecting to find a stray dog, Rev. Savage was surprised to find a man rummaging through his garbage can for food. He invited the man to come into his home and eat with the words of Christ in min, "the poor ye have with you always." Through this experience the MLK kitchen for the Poor was established.

Rev. Savage bought a building on Dorr Street to accomplish his mission. With the help of his wife and other volunteers, in 1969, he began serving meals to the poor in the Toledo area. Today, the Kitchen is located on Vance Street in Toledo,and has been in operation there since 1990.
