United Way of Greater Toledo’s Volunteer Center has received a grant to involve high school students in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. United Way is facilitating a project so that students will better understand and honor Dr. King’s legacy. The concept for MLK Day 2010's service project is to have each area high school adopt a need that may be prevalent within their neighborhood, i.e. hunger, literacy, education, homelessness, environment, health, etc. Once a school has identified the need they would like to adopt, students will research ways to alleviate the need, collect items related to the need by reaching out to community members and local businesses, choose a non-profit agency to donate their collected items to, and identify ways individuals can stay connected to the need, for example future volunteer opportunities. On January 12th from 4:00p - 6:00p, a community-wide collection will be held at United Way of Greater Toledo. This will give each school an opportunity to bring items to one central location and to view the various projects that others have been working on. During this time each school will display information about their adopted need, what they are collecting, etc. Students will present their project to those in attendance. Students from each school will also be invited to the annual MLK Day community-wide celebration and lunch at The University of Toledo where this year’s theme is “If I can Help Somebody”. During this luncheon students will be acknowledged for their participation in this National Day of Service and the community will view a PowerPoint, put together by United Way, highlighting each schools project.
