On Saturday, May 10, 2008, the United States Postal Service, National Association of Letter Carriers, United Way of Greater Toledo, Campbells, AFL-CIO, Valpak, and America’s Second Harvest are teaming up Stamp Out Hunger.
Now in its 16th year, the Stamp Out Hunger effort is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, having collected more than 836 million pounds of food nationwide since its inception. To continue its success, this effort requires the help of our local community.
Volunteers are needed to help letter carriers pick up and sort food the day of the event from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
People interested in helping should call the United Way Volunteer Center by dialing 2-1-1 or 1-800-650-HELP.
In 2007, United Way 2-1-1, a 24 hour a day, seven day a week service that connects people to help and volunteer opportunities, answered more than 60,000 calls. Forty percent of those calls were requests for food.
Commenting on the growing need for food in our community, Bill Kitson, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Toledo said, “This is a great opportunity for all of us to get our families involved and help combat hunger. I hope you will join us.” |
