Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. is a nonprofit agency which provides
nutritious home delivered meals to qualified adult Durham County residents
who cannot meet this need on their own.

We primarily serve the elderly, disabled, convalescing and others who cannot
provide for themselves.

Description:
Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc., is a small non-profit agency that relies on the kindness and dedication of hundreds of volunteers. Each day, staff coordinates delivery routes and volunteer schedules, making sure that all 300+ clients have a warm, nutritious lunch delivered by a friendly and helpful volunteer. For many homebound elders, Meals on Wheels is critical to remaining in one's home and community. Typical volunteer duties include driving delivery routes (with or without a partner), and/or packing meals in the mornings.

History:
The concept of Meals on Wheels originated in London during World War II, when the British Red Cross and the Women's Voluntary Service brought meals to the elderly who had been bombed out of their homes. The program came to the United States in 1954 after a Pennsylvania woman heard about it from a British exchange student.

The underlying objective of Meals on Wheels is to provide the proper nutrition to those individuals who cannot meet the need on their own. The service allows individuals to remain in their own homes and reduce premature institutionalization. It also allows a patient to leave a hospital or institution earlier, thereby encouraging the convalescing process in the familiar surroundings of the person's own home.

Meals on Wheels of Durham, Inc. was founded in 1975 and has served more than one million meals since its inception.
