Artspace, the center for downtown Raleigh's art community, is a non-profit visual art center dedicated to presenting quality exhibitions and educational programs within an open-studio environment.
Description:
Since 1986, Artspace has been Raleigh's visual art center providing the community with the unique opportunity to interact with working artists and participate in hands-on arts education. Artspace is the host for the First Friday Gallery Walks attracting an average of 1500-2000 people to City Market each month. Artspace provides North Carolina with an environment where artists, working in a variety of media, invite the community to become part of the creative process.
History:
Artspace is located in a building built in 1911, originally the Raleigh Livery, or stables. In the early 1980's a clever group of art lovers and philanthropists envisioned Artspace much like it exists today: an inviting open-studio environment with dynamic exhibition and performance space and an enriching arts education program. The Artspace Artists Association currently has 90+ members: 35 artists maintain studios at Artspace while the remaining artists keep studios off-site.
