Description:
A wooden schooner, the Spirit of SC is being built to be a classroom-on-the sea for SC youth. Courses aboard will develop future national/international leaders, bolster their education, and the ship will act as a roaming ambassador of the state. To improve awareness of South Carolina maritime history, increase environmental awareness of our oceans and coastal communities, the foundation also hosts an annual Maritime Festival. In 2007, the foundation will host the Charleston Tall Ships Challenge in conjunction with the Maritime Festival. A dozen Tall Ships from around the world will visit the port of Charleston and be open for tours.
History:
The foundation was started in 2000 to celebrate and make more accessible for all South Carolinians the region's rich maritime heritage. The organization seeks to accomplish this through the creation of several central elements including a classic tall ship, an annual maritime festival, ongoing educational outreach, and ultimately a maritime education center
