Mission: The Alice Birney community will do their part to ensure all Thunderbirds experience academic success. Vision: As members of the Alice Birney community, we will strive toward academic excellence by providing a rigorous and relevant curriculum. We recognize that every student is unique and we will meet the individual needs of each child. In order to ensure academic success, the faculty and staff will provide a respectful and meaningful learning environment.
Description: Alice Birney Middle School is a neighborhood middle school serving approximately 700 students in grades 6-8. We are located on Pinehurst Street just off I-26 at Ashley Phosphate. We enroll students from Ladson, Pepperhill, AC Cocoran, and Midland Park Elementary Schools. The majority of our students go on to attend Stall High School; others attend the various CCSD Magnet schools. Our student population includes many students who live in poverty (84.35 Free and Reduced Lunch recipients)and students who are English-Language Learners from the Hispanic community (25%). Currently the school is rated Unsatisfactory on our State School Report Card.
This year, a new principal has been named and the school is initiating a dramatic change in academic and student support services. Additionally, we are working to change the appearance of our school to create a more inviting, cohesive appearance for students and families. This will be the physical evidence of our philosophical and academic rebirth.
History: Alice Birney Middle School was opened in 1963. Having served grades 6-8 during this time, the school has experienced both academic success and hardship. In recent years, a number of challenges have impacted the school's ability to move forward. Currently we are rebuilding on the foundation of a newly established mission and vision and the accompanying belief statements that the faculty developed in June. With these in hand, we are reorganizing all programs and processes to implement a period of dramatic, school-wide improvement in all areas of service.
From the city of Charleston:
Take I-26 West to the Ashley Phosphate exit. At the end of the exit ramp, take a left and move to the far right lane. After crossing the interstate overpass, take a right just before the McDonald's restaurant. Continue on this frontage road for the length of two or three city blocks. Take a left into the ABMS property marked by a split entry and landscaping. If you reach Northwoods Academy, you have gone too far. **We are ordering signage for our entry; however, it is not yet available.**
