The mission of MUSC is to provide excellence in patient care, teaching and research in an environment that is respectful of others, adaptive to change, accountable for outcomes.

Description:
MUSC is an academic medical center. Our mulitiple programs have earned distinguished reputations at the Medical University of South Carolina: neuroscience, substance abuse, cardiovascular medicine, drug sciences, perinatal medicine, burn care, ophthalmology, hearing loss, genetics, rheumatology, and cancer care.
The MUSC Medical Center was named by U.S. News & World Report as one of the country's best hospitals in the treatment of digestive disorders in 2006.
The National Research Corporation has named the MUSC Medical Center among the approximately 180 hospitals nationally that have been honored with its 2004/2005 Consumer Choice Award. MUSC Children's Hospital was named in the top 25 children's hospitals in the nation by Child Magazine in its second survey of children's hospitals.

MUSC has been named one of the top 200 coding hospitals by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and HSS. The study identifies the hospitals in the nation with the most complete and compliant coding practices.

MUSC currently has some 18 members of its staff who are listed in "America's Top Doctors." Castle Connolly Medical, Ltd. the publishers of "America's Top Doctors," provides healthcare consumers with an invaluable source of information designed to identify the "Top Doctors" in their communities.

History:
The Medical University of South Carolina has served the citizens of South Carolina since 1824. It has expanded from a small private college for the training of physicians to a state university with a medical center and six colleges for the education of a broad range of health professionals, biomedical scientists and other health related personnel.

In the past ten years, $200 million in capital improvements for the Medical Center focused resources on improved quality of patient care and accessibility of services. In 2003-04 there were over 27,000 inpatient admissions and almost 630,000 outpatient visits.
