Lowcountry Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (LEAP) helps traumatized youth and people who have been victims of neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse to overcome the effects of their past experiences and to establish a new, positive path in their lives. LEAP uses Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), an approach that uses horses to facilitate the psychological treatment of clients.
Description:
LEAP is a 501 (c) (3), non-profit organization established to provide options for children and youth whose needs are not being met in traditional therapy or agency settings. LEAP's programs combine a EAP-certified therapist, a horse professional, the horse and the client. LEAP's program does not use riding or teach horsemanship. LEAP uses various tasks with the horses that are designed to facilitate a link to patterns of behavior in the client's day-to-day life.
History:
LEAP was established early in 2005. The board of directors was formed and LEAP was incorporated in April 2005. LEAP received approval from the IRS for 501 (c) (3) status is December 2005. All LEAP sessions are conducted by and designed by licensed, clinical psychologists, Drs. Kathleen Broughan and Julie Lipovsky.
