HOPE Worldwide, SC
Last updated on February 11, 2008

HOPE worldwide is an international charity that changes lives by harnessing the compassion and commitment of dedicated staff and volunteers to deliver sustainable, high-impact, community-based services to the poor and needy.

Description:
The Malcolm C. Hursey Elementary School-HOPE worldwide 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) is a school-based program that will meet the needs of working parents through extended education programs that emphasizes academics, enrichment, and character development. The 21st Century Community Learning Center provides programs during after-school hours and on Saturday mornings for K-5th graders who scored under the 25th percentile on standardized tests or who have been chosen by the school to participate. In addition, the program will work with community leaders to identify needs and connect families to the appropriate resources.

History:
Since 1994, HOPE worldwide South Carolina has used its network of over 1,000 volunteers to provide hope for at-risk children. In 2007, HOPE worldwide South Carolina earned an Exemplary Program award from the South Carolina Department of Education (DOE). In 2006, we earned the Friends of Education Award by South Carolina's Chapter of the Association for Supervision & Curriculum Development and were also selected by the US DOE as a Model Program highlighted at the White House Conference on Faith Based and Community Initiatives.

The program operates Monday through Friday for 15 hours, Saturday Academy is open for 4 hours and a Summer Enrichment Program for 4 weeks during the summer. The program’s volunteers are essential in organizing sports, games, and other physical activities that promote an active lifestyle for low-income youths, many of whom do not have the opportunity to participate in organized sports and stay indoors for fear of gangs and violence.
