Jane Edwards School will provide a learning environment conducive to a quality education for every school in all academic subjects. Students will feel a sense of responsibility for their learning and behavior thus creating lifelong learners and productive citizens.
Description:
Jane Edwards Community School is a rural, Title I school located on Edisto Island, SC. The school goes from four year olds in a Child Development program through eighth grade. There are 132 students, 11 homeroom teachers, and 8 support teachers in areas such as art, computer, special education, etc. Reading is the weakest academic area school-wide. As fits with a school with a 90% poverty level, personal reading materials in the home are practically nonexistent. We are in the first year of planning to become a partial magnet school focusing on technology and creative arts to more actively engage our students in the learning process. This technology and creative arts theme was chosen by the students, parents, and community at large.
History:
Jane Edwards has been part of the island for almost 100 years. It has been located in several places. The current location has been in existence over 60 years and has moved from a one-hall building for K-5 to a renovated building with two halls for grades CD-8. Several current teachers attended elementary school there and a few volunteers went to the school and later taught at the school for over 30 years.
