Independent Transportation Network (ITNCharlestonTrident)

ITNCharlestonTrident is a Lowcountry non-profit 501(c)(3) transportation organization using caring and supportive volunteers to provide transportation to seniors (65+) and the visually impaired so they may live independent, healthy and productive lives.

Description:
ITNCharlestonTrident provides dignified transportation services to senior and the visually impaired. ITN use private automobiles and a combination of volunteer and paid drivers to transport local seniors. Members of the service call ITN any time and get a ride 24/7 to anywhere within the service area.

History:
After five years of research and three years of providing a sustainable local solution for the senior mobility issue in Portland, Maine, the ITN model was ready to be replicated. In 2004, ITNAmerica was established to create a national, non-profit transportation service for America’s aging population. During 2005 the first learning cluster of replication communities formed to start ITNs in California, New Jersey, Florida, and South Carolina.

Charleston's ITN is a grassroots effort. Caring individuals spent a year fundraising, created the non-profit 'Senior Wheels', and laid the groundwork to build an ITN in Charleston. ITNCharlestonTrident has been operational since October 2006.
