Last updated on August 11, 2008

The mission of Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is:

  • to put the elimination of poverty housing on the hearts and minds of residents of Berkeley County;
  • to create opportunities for partner families to improve their lives;
  • to restore dignity, hope and faith, while providing opportunities for Christian fellowship and service to others; and
  • to build quality, affordable homes in partnership with low income families.
  • Description:
    Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is a nonprofit, ecumenical, Christian housing ministry that seeks to eliminate substandard and inadequate housing from Berkeley County. Currently there are over 500 homes in Berkeley County which do not have indoor plumbing. Habitat partners with low-income families to build simple, decent, secure housing. Habitat assists partner families in the purchase of their house by providing a twenty year, no interest mortgage. The cost of a house includes land, all materials included in the house, and any purchased labor. We do not include any profit in the price of the house.

    History:
    This habitat affiliate was started in 1990. To date, we have built 18 houses. Habitat for Humanity of Berkeley County is an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. We are responsible for our own building, fundraising, volunteer recruitment, publicity and family selection. Funding comes from concerned individuals, corporations, businesses, churches and foundations. We are a tax exempt 501 (c) (3) organization.
