Neighborhood House is located in the basement of Our Lady of Mercy Church on the east side of downtown Charleston. Our mission is to provide emergency services for people in need on the peninsula, while encouraging and supporting self-esteem and interdependence among the people we serve. We are sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy.
Description:
Neighborhood House provides a soup kitchen at lunchtime Monday to Friday and a food pantry for people on the peninsula. We also have a clothing center which offers clothing and small household items to people in need of these items. We provide emergency assistance for people in the downtown area in need of medicine and utility assistance. Our senior citizen program meets 2-3 Wednesdays a month. We are always seeking volunteers for our senior program to plan activities and presentations on topics of interest to seniors. Now we are in the beginning stages of a parenting program and need both mentors and presenters for this program.
History:
Neighborhood House was started in 1915 on the eastside by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. It was an outreach from St.Francis Hospital offering both health care and other emergency services. We moved into our present location in the 1960's. By the 1980's the need for food services caused us to begin a soup kitchen at noon as well as a food pantry. We now offer senior services, a parenting program, and emergency services because of the increased need in the downtown area.
