Metanoia works with the residents of the Chicora/Cherokee neighborhood in North Charleston to strengthen our community through Youth Leadership Development Programs and Homeownership Development.
Description:
Metanoia partners with Chicora Elementary School and St. Matthew Baptist Church to offer Youth Leadership Programs both After School and during the summer months. Metanoia's Young Leaders Program meets after school during the academic year and is funded by a TUW grant. Metanoia's Summer Freedom School meets all day for five weeks in the summer and is a literacy based summer camp. Metanoia also partners with the Charleston Homeownership Resource Center to offer quarterly homebuyer education classes in our community and we either build new or rehabilitate existing housing stock in the community. We often use volunteers for some of the lighter duty housing work in the community.
History:
Metanoia was originally begun by the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship of SC who wanted to do something about poverty within the boundaries of their own state. They created a funded job position for two "Urban Ministers" to be hired and spend a year working at building relationships and getting community feedback on what might be done to help. Since then, Metanoia has become a seperate non-profit organization with multiple funding sources. In early 2006 the Board voted to expand the territory where we are willing to work from Chicora/Cherokee to adjacent communities of need.
