Jenkins Institute For Children
Last updated on August 8, 2008

With over 100 years of loving, caring and sharing, our vision is to be the major children and family advocate and support institution in the state. To also provide these individuals with the tools necessary for academic and personal success through programs that are curriculum based, prevention based, experiential, interactive and community-oriented. With a focus on building the whole person -- including exposure and involvement in the arts and science, math, technology, critical thinking skills, decision making skills, goals setting, problem solving, reading/comprehension, and other life skills. We are assisting and enabling children, families to build their potential to be productive residents in our communities.

Description:
We are a non profit corporation governed by a board of directors consisting of fifteen (15) members an a advisory board that gives direction and information on trends and community issues on child welfare matters and policies. We are presently in the process of accreditation and are awaiting the first response to the application. We are a licensed by the state of South Carolina agency.

History:
The Daniel Joseph Jenkins Institute for Children is the current descendant of the Jenkins Orphanage founded in 1891 by the Reverend D.J. Jenkins. The orphanage was originally located at 20 Franklin Street in the city of Charleston. It reopened its present location of 3923 Azalea Drive, North Charleston after a severely damaging fire in 1937. Different skills were taught at the Institute, however, music gave the institution worldwide recognition. Edmond Jenkins, the son of Rev. D.J. Jenkins, implemented and coordinated the music programs here. As a result as many as five jazz bands were organize and they tour the US from Maine to Florida. One of the bands played at the Anglo-American Exposition in London, England. These performances provided the principal economic support for the Jenkins Orphanage for many years. The bands were training grounds for some outstanding jazz musicians, and one played for many years with Duke Ellington Band. Currently, on our campus of girls, we serve ages 11-21 as a residential treatment facility that offers a low management setting for up to 19 residents.
