Newborns in Need (NIN)is a non-denominational, volunteer organization comprised of people who love to sew, knit or crochet and who use those talents to make baby blankets, quilts, burial layettes, booties, hats, etc. These items are donated free of charge to babies in the community who are in need or in crisis.
Description:
The Charleston SC Chapter of NIN, the only chapter in SC, works throughout the month to sew, knit or crochet baby items that are needed. In addition, VERY gently used baby clothing for preemie babies through Toddler Size 2 is also collected. We also accept disposable diapers and unopened/unexpired formula. Very gently used maternity clothing in all sizes is also accepted. All items received are donated free of charge to those in need.
History:
Newborns in Need was created July 7, 1992, by Carol C. Green. Through her efforts to help infants in her local hospitals in Missouri, others became interested, and the charity now has chapters all across the US. The local Charleston Chapter was started in 2001 and meets the second Saturday of each month at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 1150 East Montague Ave., North Charleston, from 9:30 am to noon. This Chapter currently donates to eleven agencies: A.I.D.S., Birthright of Charleston, MUSC Children's Care Clinic, East Cooper Community Outreach, Florence Crittenton, Low Country Crisis Pregnancy Center, MUSC Level I and II Nurseries, MUSC - NICU, Roper Hospital downtown, Roper St. Francis Hospital, and Trident Medical Center.
