We work with others to conserve, protect and enhance fish, wildlife, plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.

Description:
Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge is one of over 500 refuges in the National Wildlife Refuge System. The System, encompassing over 90 million acres, is a network of lands and waters managed specifically for wildlife. The refuge system is administered by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, an agency of the Department of the Interior.

History:
Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1932 as a refuge for migratory birds. The refuge, which encompasses over 66,000 acres, consists of a 20 mile expanse of barrier islands and salt marsh along the Atlantic Ocean. 28,000 acres are protected as a Wilderness Area. Only the Sewee Visitor and Environmental Education Center and Garris Landing are located on the mainland. All other areas are accessible by boat only. The southernmost island, Bulls Island was acquired in 1936. A ferry concession takes refuge visitors to Bulls Island on regularly scheduled days. Recreational opportunities include surf fishing, hiking, birdwatching and photography. The northernmost island, Cape Island has the largest nesting area of threatened loggerhead sea turtles outside of Florida, averaging over 1000 nests a season. Other threatened or endangered species are found on the refuge, including sea beach amaranth and the wood stork.
