East Cooper Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere, from all walks of life, to develop communities with people in need by building houses, so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which every person can experience God's love and can live and grow into all that God intends.
Description:
East Cooper Habitat for Humanity works to eliminate substandard housing East of the Cooper River. We partner with the homeowners and members of the local community to build decent affordable housing for people in need. Our homeowners are selected based on need, ability to pay and willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity. We are currently building homes in the Greenhill and Phillips communities of Mt. Pleasant.
History:
East Cooper Habitat for Humanity was founded in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in 1990. Using donations from several area churches, numerous enthusiastic volunteers from all walks of life, and a gift of land from the town of Mount Pleasant, the first two East Cooper Habitat homes were constructed. Subsequently, more lots were purchased and houses built. The total number of homes built by our chapter in now thirty-nine, with six more to be completed by the end of 2006. Four of these houses are located in the old village of Mt. pleasant on Greenwhich St. We have built four homes in Awendaw and McClellanville. We have build 14 homes and have two under construction in the Greenhill Community, located off of Mathis Ferry Road in Mt. Pleasant. We have started the construction of two of the four homes to be built on Bobo Road, in the Phillips community, off of Rt. 41 in Mt. Pleasant. By the end of 2006 East Cooper Habitat for Humanity will have built homes for 45 deserving families.
