The mission of Trident Literacy Association is to increase literacy in Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester Counties by offering instruction, using a self-paced, individualized curriculum, in reading, writing, mathematics, English as a Second Language, GED-preparation and basic computer use.
Description:
Trident Literacy serves adults age 17 and up who do not have a high school diploma and nonspeakers of English. We serve more than 2,000 students annually at seven main sites and approximately 20 outreach locations throughout the county. We are grateful for the assistance of more than 200 volunteer tutors. Trident Literacy specializes in one-on-one instruction or working with students in small groups of no more than five people. Each student's curriculum is tailored to his or her specific needs, so everyone progresses at their own pace. The annual fee is generally $25 per student, however, at the downtown site, which is in a particularly impoverished area, the fee is $12.50 and may be reduced. At some sites there is no fee at all. TLA provides training that helps people improve their skills so they can improve their lives. Some of our students go on to higher education. Some get jobs, are able to keep their jobs, or get promoted. Our standards are high, and TLA's performance statistics have surpassed the state and federal standards for three consecutive years.
History:
Trident Literacy Association was founded in 1972 by a group of volunteers who used a shoebox of index cards to track students and tutors. Since then it has evolved into a well-respected, leading agency in adult education, serving more than 2,000 students in the tri-county with a staff of 26 employees and the assistance of more than 200 volunteers.
