Our mission is to reduce the impact and incidence of child abuse on the children and their families in the Tri-county community.
Description:
The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center (DNLCC) is a charter member of the National Children's Alliance and has historically provided state of the art assessment and treatment services to children who are alleged to be victims of abuse. By bringing together child protective services, law enforcement, medical, legal, educational, and mental health professionals, we provide a coordinated approach to helping children and their families. What makes DNLCC special is our focus on the Child!
History:
In 1988, a study committee appointed by the Charleston County Legislative Delegation identified the need for formal coordination of the delivery of services to children at risk in our community. The findings of this study resulted in the recommendation to establish a center to coordinate services for child victims. The Junior League of Charleston, Inc., took the responsibility for implementing that recommendation, and in 1989, a community-based task force and a board of directors were formed. This goal was realized in the development of The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children's Center. Since 1989, Dr. Ralston, DNLCC's Executive director, has been the director of this collaborative community based program focused on reducing the incidence of child abuse and its impact on the child, family and community. Although the initial expectation was that the DNLCC would serve approximately 200 children per year, to date over 13,000 children have been seen. Currently 44 community agencies collaborate to provide service through the DNLCC.
