To enhance the quality of life by offering comfort and compassionate care with dignity and respect throughout the end of life's journey.
Description:
Hospice of Charleston is a non-profit community organization which provides high quality hospice care to terminally ill individuals and their families living in Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties. Hospice is professional, compassionate health care that enables individuals diagnosed with any life limiting illness (not just cancer) to live as comfortably as possible so they can make the most of their remaining days. Under the direction of the patient's physician, hospice nurses, social workers, home health aides, chaplains, and trained volunteers all work together to provide medical, emotional and spiritual support to the patient and family.
History:
In 1979, it began with a vision of a handful of pioneers who were able to honor the wishes of a parishioner of Circular Congregational Church to die in her own home. Compassion and caring drove the creation of services for family members throughout the Tri-county area. As valuable as hospice care has become, 25 years ago few had heard of hospice care and much less knew what it was.
