Building Homes for Today and Hope for Tomorrow
Description:
The United Methodist Relief Center uses volunteer labor from around the USA and locally along with donated funds to renovate homes in the rural areas of Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties. The homes are owned by people who are at 30-50% of the average median income for the area and are in severe need of repair. All aspects of construction are addressed from foundations to roofs. The blessing of a warm, dry and safe home enables families to think beyond day-to-day survival to actually living.
History:
The United Methodist Relief Center began as a disaster response agency after Hurricane Hugo ravaged the area in 1989. At that time extremely substandard living conditions were uncovered in the rural areas and the United Methodist Relief Center was formed to address this poverty.
