The mission of the South Carolina Guardian ad Litem Program is to recruit, train, and supervise volunteers who are court-appointed to represent and advocate for the best interests of children in the Family Court proceedings involving allegations of abuse and neglect.
Description:
Guardians will do an independent investigation of all relevant parties, explore alternatives available to the child's placement, prepare a written report for the Family Court, attend all court hearings, maintain monthly contact with the child, assist in the implementation of any treatment plan for the family and the child prescribed by the court. Volunteers spend many hours traveling to visit the children and monitoring the treatment that the children are receiving. All children in foster care are in regular mental health counseling and have many struggles with life.
History:
The Berkeley County Guardian ad Litem Program began in 1986 and is supervised by the Governor's Office of Executive Policy and Programs. Presently there are approximately 75 volunteers serving in Berkeley County.
