The Berkeley Museum is operated to collect, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret Berkeley County's cultural and natural history.
Its goal is to educate, promote and increase the appreciation and understanding of our common heritage by providing educational opportunities, historical perspective and recreational enjoyment for citizens and visitors alike.
Description:
The Berkeley Museum is a 501C3 private non-profit organization. The museum is housed in a 5500 sqft building built to look like a typical plantation home. It covers over 12,000 years of history and has exhibits covering topics that include 20th Century Medicine, Forestry, Santee Cooper Projects and Rural Electrification. Some exhibits are on loan from local groups such as the Dark Water Divers and Civil War Re-enactors. Future exhibits include a Moonshine exhibit and the Historical Society's schoolhouse now adjacent on the museum's property.
History:
The Berkeley Museum was completed in 1992 where it was a Berkeley County Historical Society facility. In 1999 the museum became a separate entity on its own.The museum has one full-time employee and 1 part-time employee,12 Board members and approximately 125 members.

The museum is off Hwy. 52 by-pass in Moncks Corner. It is located within the Old Santee Canal Park.
From Charleston, take I-26 to exit 208. Follow Hwy.52 through Goose Creek to Moncks Corner. Go straight through to the third traffic light. Turn right onto Stony Landing Road. Follow Stony Landing Road to the end, entering the Old Santee Canal Park. The museum is the first building on the right once inside the park. |
