The Ronald McDonald House provides a home away from home for families of seriously ill children. It is our goal to provide a home-like atmosphere, very different from hotel rooms and waiting rooms, that children and parents can call their own. The support that families gain from each other, is vital to help ease the stress of dealing with a seriously ill child. Through the support of the community, we are able to have our doors open each night to twelve families in need.
Description:
Families who travel great distances, find comfort and a home-like atmosphere at the Ronald McDonald House while their children are treated at local hospitals here in Charleston. Due to an average of 9 families a night who are turned away from Ronald McDonald House, we began construction on a 13 bedroom expansion in April. Once complete, we will be able to house 25 families, and hopefully, turn away far fewer families in the future.
History:
Opening as the 50th house in the US, our house opened on September 10, 1983 with the help of many generous donors who fulfilled a need for a place families could call home while their children face life threatening illnesses.
