Connie never really got to attend school regularly. Then marriage and children kept her from going back. Now in her 50s, Connie comes to Trident Literacy Association every week, working with the same tutor for more than four years. She is determined to improve her understanding and her economic situation. Her tutor says SHE is the one receiving the gift. Trident Literacy Association has locations throughout the Lowcountry where adults come to get help with reading, writing, math, preparation for the GED exam, English as a Second Language, WorkKeys Career Readiness training, and computer basics. Tutors do not require formal training, just a willingness to help other adults learn and the ability to be flexible. What matters most is that you care about other people, and enjoy watching them succeed. We ask for a minimum of 2 hours a week, and prefer a one-year commitment, but that is also flexible. Helping illiterate adults become self-sufficient is a gift you give to them, to yourself, to your community. We all are better for it.
Volunteers are asked to attend a 2+ hour orientation (held the 3rd Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m.). Volunteers are then encouraged to observe at one of our sites. Our staff will help you with materials, but "lessons" will be up to you and your "student." This opportunity is sponsored by: Trident Literacy Association
