Rabbit Care Volunteer

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on June 3, 2009

Assist with care of one or two rabbits at area Petsmart Adoption Centers. We have rabbits in the Mount Pleasant, Summerville, and West Ashley Petsmart stores.

When possible, we prefer to have one or more assigned day(s) per week for each volunteer. Timing is flexible; some of our volunteers visit the bunnies during their lunch break while others prefer to go in the evenings. Our volunteers are a dedicated, caring group of people, and someone is usually willing to switch days with advance notice if something arises in scheduling.

Duties include:

Sweeping floor of Adoption Center behind cages, removing anything potentially dangerous to rabbit(s)
Allowing rabbit(s) approximately 1 hour of exercise time in adoption center room
Changing litter box(es)
Wiping down cage floor
Adding allotted amount of pellets
Changing water bottle(s)
Replacing toys in cage if needed
Noting if any supplies are running low (ie hay, newspapers, toys, etc) and notifying chapter manager.
Play with the bunny(ies)!

Fosterers must have a good basic knowledge of rabbit care, and/or be willing to invest some time to learn with a mentor and online materials.
Must love animals!
Patience is imperative when working with rabbits, who are a prey species and easily frightened
Must be able to transport rabbit(s) to vet if emergency arises (vet costs are paid by Lowcountry HRS)
Must be over the age of 21, though older children are welcome and encouraged to assist with adult supervision! We currently have several teens and pre-teens that are accompanied by parents and greatly enjoy spending time with the rabbits. This is also helpful for community service hours that are required by many high schools, and also helpful for college applications!
