The American Red Cross Biomedical Services will fulfill the needs of the American people for the safest, most reliable, most cost-effective blood services through voluntary donations.
Description:
American Red Cross Blood Services provides life-saving blood in times of conflict, natural disaster, and to hospitals for their patients' needs. Utah, Idaho, and Montana are served by the Lewis and Clark Region. Volunteers assist with a variety of needs including welcoming our valued donors, making reminder calls to donors, transporting blood donations, assisting on Mobil blood drives, assembling equipment and supplies, and Spanish interpretation. There is always a need for good people wanting to do good things .
History:
On May 21, 1881 Clara Barton, with a group of associates, founded the American Association of the Red Cross. Her unique contribution included organizing volunteers to assist victims of natural disasters. In early 1940, when England faced possible invasion, it was realized that life-saving blood might be needed on a massive scale. In anticipation of the need, the Blood Transfusion Betterment Association in New York, supported financially by the American Red Cross, undertook a dramatic pilot project to collect blood for shipment to the British Isles. By the end of the war, the Red Cross received many blood donations, saving thousands of lives which would have been lost in earlier wars when blood therapy was unknown. On January12, 1948, a nationwide civilian blood program continued ensuring blood was available for all. Throughout the history of the American Red Cross, it has provided unwavering support to our nation and the world during times of incredible need.
