Magnificat Houses, Inc
Magnificat Houses offers refuge and hope to the destitute by creating homes where people of different mental abilities, social backgrounds, religions and cultures can live together in community. MHI provides a bridge back to the outside world and the confidence to cross it.
Description:
Started in 1968 by our present director, Rose Mary Badami, Magnificat has grown from one house for the poor to ten houses in addition to special projects such as a thrift store, soup kitchen, an emergency shelter for "street girls", offices, apartments, a psychosocial rehabilitation center for adults with mental illness and a residence for adults with HIV/AIDS.
History:
Magnificat began with one small house in southeast Houston. A benefactor offered rent-free use of the house for up to a year. The new home filled up quickly. Less than a year later, MHI purchased it's first house-Anawim House- in east Houston. In years, Magnificat has grown into 16 properties serving the needs of society in Houston.
