The mission of Cancer Counseling Inc. is to assist cancer patients, their families and friends in coping with the emotional effects of cancer on their lives through no-cost professional counseling and community education.
Description:
For the past 27 years, Cancer Counseling has made an important difference to people in our community and is the only local charity that is chartered to help 'the families' of people that are diagnosed with cancer through free professional counseling therapy for individuals, groups, and families. CCI serves annually over three thousand people in the Gulf Coast area. Cancer Counseling recognizes the devastating impact such news has on the family of a cancer patient, and works hard to provide emotional support for those that can not otherwise afford it. CCI's model is to find counselors that will work at a reduced rate and then pay 100% of the ticket to help the families cope with this devastating news. It is hard to calculate CCI's impact, but from client testimonials it is fairly significant. CCI only has a staff of 2 people so you can be sure that it is an efficient charity.
History:
Elise NeeDell founded Cancer Counseling in 1982. Her personal experience with cancer revealed the need to make professional emotional therapy accessible to all those in our community affected by the cancer experience. Since 1982 the organization has grown substantially, expanding the clinical staff from 2 to 39 practitioners. Cancer Counseling, Inc. remains the only not for profit agency in Greater Houston and surrounding areas that provides free professional emotional therapy and education for all-site cancer patients and their families regardless of age, race, gender, religion or socio-economic status. CCI now serves in excess of 3,000 patients annually through individual and group counseling/educational programs. During the last two years the caseload has increased by 98%.
