Open doors with Literacy Advance - help another adult learn to read!

Volunteer Opportunity Details:

Last updated on July 1, 2009

Volunteer Tutors work in one of two programs:

  1. The English as a Second Language (ESL) program teaches conversation, reading and writing skills to small groups of adults whose first language is not English. At Literacy Advance, we have learners from over 70 countries speaking more than 30 different languages. The classes focus on everyday English skills - such as being able to communicate on visits to the doctor, complete application forms and read instructions - based on the needs and goals of the students in each class. We encourage classes that are lively and fun, use games, word puzzles and role-play, and use real-world materials instead of only textbooks (e.g. newspapers, flyers, food labels).

  2. In the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program, tutors work one-on-one with adults who want to improve their reading and writing skills. With the help of the Literacy Advance staff, tutors will work with their learner to determine that person’s particular literacy needs and goals. A curriculum can then be tailored to the needs of that individual, using a variety of curricula and other resources, and examples of authentic materials (such as application forms, personal letters, etc).

Please note: Literacy Advance operates in over 30 locations throughout Houston, so if the main campus at 2424 Wilcrest is not convenient to you, please ask about our other sites!

Volunteer Tutors are asked to commit for a minimum period of 12 weeks (we'd love it if you wanted to stay longer!), usually teaching twice per week for 2 hours at a time (there is also an option to tutor one 3-hour class per week, or to co-tutor an ESL class with another person).

Requirements include attending a class observation, followed by a 5-hour Tutor Training Workshop (registration required, although there is no cost for this training). On-going training and support is provided in the form of Enrichment Labs.
